CRO Challenge Number 9: I spend too much time on internal rubbish

In this blog’s series, I’m zooming in on the top 10 most common issues that CROs have fed back to me on my travels this year. What’s interesting (and maybe surprising) is the consistency of these challenges, regardless of the industry and the size of the businesses I’ve engaged with. I’d love to hear your feedback on whether these resonate with you, or what else is causing you to reach for a bottle of the hard stuff.

Each week, I’ll offer you my “Magnificent 7” ideas for how you might deal with one particular issue. These ideas are always practical, simple and based on my personal experience…as well as from ideas provided through my CRO community. This week, I’ll address issue number 9, which shines a light on the time-consuming internal stuff that often distracts us from behaving like a truly customer-centric leader. Perhaps you’re currently lying on a beach or sipping a well-earned sangria…no better time than a bit of self-reflection and a commitment to chop out the rubbish from your monthly schedule!

Every week of each month, I’m providing a free downloadable template or tool that I’ve designed to help accelerate revenue growth. This month’s tool is the ‘90 Day Plan for CROs’ – a very popular framework (with specific examples) for lighting a fire under your business. It’s proved to be hugely popular with both seasoned CROs wanting to kickstart their top line and new CROs fresher into their role wanting to get quick control and gain credibility in their role.

CRO Challenge #9 – “I spend too much time on internal rubbish”

There is a high demand from board executives and business owners for continual updates, meetings and operating reviews.

Here are my ‘Magnificent 7’ ideas to help address this challenge…

  1. Control and comfort the stakeholder audience by communicating a clear goal, a coherent strategy and a set of objectives, which allow for simpler monitoring and updating.
  2. Reduce the volume of board presentation packs by summarising the key headlines and offering ‘deep dives’ for topical issues.
  3. Reduce the need for continual scrutiny by building trust and increasing business transparency with stakeholders e.g. by promoting access to insight within CRM dashboards.
  4. Reduce the requirement for ad hoc exec customer briefs by enabling access to high-quality and topical Account Development Plans (ADPs).
  5. Educate your execs on the importance and time-consuming nature of your external facing activities by sharing front-line stories and ensuring they have personally walked through your customers’ journey with your business.
  6. Swing the pendulum back towards execs by immersing them in customer-centric activities and by giving them duties to undertake e.g. customer sponsorship, event presentations etc.
  7. Build a strong RevOps capability to deliver essential, repeatable business dashboards with trust-worthy insight e.g. forecasts.

Addressing the challenge of excessive time spent on internal tasks within CRO operations comes down to planning, communication and the utilization of shared dashboards. Implementing a well-defined stakeholder and executive communication strategy helps minimize ad hoc inquiries that can disrupt planned activities, fostering smoother operational flow and increased productivity.
